After Little Parlor closed last week comes news from EaterLA that Cobras and Matadors on Hollywood Blvd. is closing and will become the second Umami Burger location. It seemed like Cobras was doing ok, but Stephen Arroyo seems to be retreating and repositioning. This seems like a good move to me since it's not that easy to get a good burger in the Silver Lake/Los Feliz area, and I happen to be an Umami fan.
Here's more from Squid Ink about Umami's third planned location in Fred Segal's Santa Monica store.

Also on Eater: Next spring, Barbarella will get a second story South American-style sushi bar called Sushi Mambo. That leaves plenty of time to clean out all the bad juju from Zen Sushi.

went to barbarella to get a glass of wine and some apps last weekend. DISASTER. They couldn't figure out how to get me a glass of wine (they were out of the two most basic whites). The whole vibe was just wrong. They should offer Purell on the way out.
Have you been to The Fix in Silver Lake? I'm a big fan of Umami (work down the street and have had all the burgers), but I like The Fix more. They're a bit more traditional than Umami in the dressings, but have a larger selection of toppings and better fries. Just don't order a buffalo burger (there or anywhere) - it's just too lean to support a burger. Whatever the case, Umami & The Fix within walking distance will not be good for my health.
so Sgt Recruiter is also closing?
Pat,
Adam had mentioned that he was going to take over the Fred Segal restaurant space in Santa Monica a couple of months back for the second location of Umami. Do you know if that fall through? Happy to have more burger love on the east side, and I think this is a better fit than the westside. Just curious how big this expansion will be?
Oops, typo. Fall=fell...
Jill - yes, the ABC posting notice went up on the Fred Segal space about a week ago.
The Fix gives a great burger, much better than Umami. I sure hope this doesn't siphon off business for them. They're high on taste if low on ambiance. Also - please don't shutter Sgt. Recruiter!
despite all of the nice things that have been said about The Fix in this comment section, this news cannot be good for The Fix and its connections. say what you like about which place makes the best burger, but the fact is Umami has become a commercial phenomenon in LA despite a tough economy for eateries(hence this expansion). the hard truth is that The Fix (whatever its virtues may be) has just not been able to inspire the buzz and excitement that Umami has.
so sad about cobras & matadors. loved that place. what a huge loss to the neighborhood.
somebody make 'em stop... please. There is no umami in anything they do.
