Several diners who ate raw freshwater crabs on a dare at Orange County sushi restaurants became ill six to 10 weeks later from a parasite, reports the
Orange County Register. International Marine has stopped selling the offending critters, which weren't meant to be eaten raw anyway. But there's always someone who has to play Fear Factor...

Should've chased it with a stiff shot of sake ... great for killing parasites.
Makes me wonder, a bit...
Some sushi that is commonly served cooked almost everywhere CAN be had raw, like octopus (delicious raw, though I've yet to actually have it live). I guess the key here is that they weren't served live by a credentialed chef, just grabbed by customers.
Also I found out recently that there is a far higher risk of contracting parasites from freshwater fish than saltwater. So for us sushi-loving people, we can keep on eating that raw tuna, at least until the mercury kills us.
If the vendors follow FDA regulations for storing fresh seafood, there shouldnt be much to worry. Among the crappiest parasite to get is chlonorchis sinensis which can cause gallbladder/liver cancer (real bad situation), but its very rare here (its mostly in Asia). Farmed salmon has almost no parasites compared to those living 'wild'.
Most parasites give some diarrhea so its no big deal ;)
