Wally's Central Coast Wine & Food Celebration

Imagine if the guys from "Sideways" ate some magic toadstools and got lost in a giant wineland, where every which way they turned, jovial fellows offered them glasses of vintage pinot noir. And the only escape was to accept morsel after morsel of tempting snacks...that's what Sunday's Central Coast Wine & Food Celebration at Wally's Wines was like.

Pinot noir was definitely the star, but there were some other excellent selections as well, like Qupe's 2004 Rousanne and Kunin's 2003 Syrah. And the Pinots from the likes of Sea Smoke, Melville and Au Bon Climat were exceedingly nice, too. We tasted brisket from Santa Barbara's Bouchon and tri-tip from the Hitching Post, but for once it was the desserts that were calling my name.
I went back for seconds on Grace's white chocolate ice cream with cashews (left photo) and Szechuan peppercorns. Campanile had refreshing, intense raspberry and passion fruit popsicles and Literati had ethereal little squares of puff pastry topped with panna cotta and huckleberries (right photo).

And it was for a good cause -- a benefit for the Michael Bonaccorsi Scholarship Fund at UC Davis. Some people went home with some darling puppies from the auction...hope they weren't too tipsy when they put in those bids!

Totally agree - Sunday's Central Coast tasting is one of the best wine tastings of the year in So. Calif. If you like Syrah, Petite Syrah, Pinot Noir, Rousanne, Viognier, and some other wines from the Central Coast, then plan on being there next year. My 2nd year and one event I would never choose to miss.
Saxum's wines, as well as those from so many other well known as well as unknown wineries made the day very special.
Thanks to the wineries, Wally's Wines and restaurants such as AOC, Lucques, Grace, Spago, Hitching Post, Literati II, Bouchon, Sushi Roku, and Sona that I can remember for their donation of products, services and staff that provided an afternoon truly worth every cent of the 95 dollars paid to attend.

I'm sooo bummed I missed out on this event. It was either weekend in SF + Napa or Wally's Celebration. I'll definitely go next year. I'm so jealous!

Good seeing you there Pat! You are so quick on your reviews - I'm impressed. The Sea Smoke was by far my favourite wine, and the desserts were divine. Hope you had a chance to try the espresso gelato from Spago (I think) - it was outrageously good!

sorry I missed it too. Last year's was great, I even got to try some SQN and get on the wait list for their allocations. Going to Sonoma in a couple of weeks. Anybody have any tips on wineries/eatiers? Is Ad Hoc open yet?

Dabbler-- Ad Hoc isn't open yet but should be by mid-September. Try the beautiful and delicioius new place next door: Redd. (Both of which are in Yountville, in the Napa Valley.)
