There's eggs hiding under that cheese...
... or not. You're welcome to differ, and please do, in the comments below, but I'm willing to bet it's right up there. Someone on Chowhound was looking for breakfast in Highland Park recently, and it seemed like Antigua Bread or possibly Juanita's were pretty much the only choices. I'm sure there's plenty of other Mexican spots in the area that serve breakfast, but it would be hard to do better than the chilequiles or huevos rancheros at My Taco. Breakfast is served all day, and you can top the breakfast plates with a nice array of salsas. The price is right, at around $5.50 per plate, incuding rice and beans. The chilequiles were like nachos that went to heaven and for their reward, were covered in eggs and cheese. The beans aren't that great, and I never eat Mexican rice, so it might be nice if you could get fruit instead, but that's a minor quibble. I don't know if the coffee's decent, because I usually pre-caffeinate before going out, but the jamaica drink goes really well with the chilequiles. My friend was so happy with his huevos that I never got a taste, but they looked good. There's also eggs with chorizo and I think eggs with nopales -- got to try that next! If you've only been for the barbacoa or the potato or goat tacos, next time, try breakfast.

Pete's Blue Chip has an amazing breakfast burrito! My husband says it totally schools the one at My Taco. Also, I've heard that Antonjito's Guererros is good, but haven't made it there yet. And El Arco Iris serves breakfast all day too, but they're a little pricey.
penny's burgers has much better breakfast plates (all served with hashbrowns or beans), omelets, and breakfast burritos are all amazing. i pretty much rotate between the chorizo plate, works breakfast burrito or bacon avocado omelet. the portions are huge so i only get their once or twice a month for breakfast.

I think you need to qualify the post by saying you think it's the best mexi-breakfast. And perhaps that it's not vegetarian friendly. That being said, I think La Estrella boasts better tacos and sauce, and they're open 24-7, which is nice after being in the pub late.
OK, Hairy, what's the best non-Mexican breakfast?
And La Estrella might have better tacos, but I was talking about breakfast specifically. My Taco's tacos are inconsistent -- the chorizo ones are frankly bad, the carne asada ones can be pretty good.
I have been looking for a good cheap mexican breakfast, to match Gilbert's in Santa Monica, for years!
Pat, my fingers are crossed that this is close - I'll give it a try, thank you : )
tacos delta has outstanding chilaquiles.
I'll confirm the Taco Delta chilaquiles kudos.
Sadly, my husband didn't like the informality of the seating for breakfast (if he's tired enough to need coffee and fried foods, he's tired enough to also need a comfy seat) but at least he too agreed - their chilaquiles rocked!
I need to do a drive by on My Taco and check it out.
My Taco's food is vastly overrated - they actually put milk in their beans, something my Mexican-American family holds in the utmost contempt (it's akin to putting cottage cheese in a lasagne, or Velveeta in macaroni and cheese). Bleh. The chilaquiles are actually better at Taco Spot, oddly enough (they're hotter, with better salsa - much more the hangover cure/leftovers they truly are).
Of course, the best chilaquiles in SoCal are found at La Super Rica in Santa Barbara. They're on par with my grandmother's, which is saying a lot. Of course, you DO have to be in SB to get them, a slight inconvenience...
My Taco's specialty is not breakfast, they don't have pancakes in their menu, though I've had pancakes there thru special request. They will fix you up - "have it your way".
It's their barbacoa de borrego, their tacos de papa, birria de chivo and consome', shrimp burritos, and lately, their talapia stake plate.
I like their menudo for breakfast on weekends.
I have to admit, they have good seasoning on their food. There are those who come from far, who have aquired the tasre for taqueria My Taco food. Some of our favorite soldiers' request while visiting has been a meal at My Taco, you know?
The business has flourished from a mobile birria, barbacoa, and carne asada tacos and was officialy established since '94, some of us are fond of our community and its memories.
