I'm working on a side project that involves mapping some great food neighborhoods, and I'd love some suggestions for Boyle Heights. For now, I'm trying to stay pretty much within that neighborhood specifically, even though Tacos Baja Ensenada isn't technically in Boyle Heights, alas.

You can't forget Al & Beas right next to Hollenbeck Police Station. They have one the best burritos. I always get either the combination or the all meat.

I'm a Ciro's fan. The flautas are the best. Ciro's is on Evergreen, near the Ascension Church. Across the street, up the block is the more famous Manuel's El Tepeyac. Of course, the Hollenbeck Burrito is legendary.
Also near Hollenbeck PD, El Sol Restaurant (1949 E. 1st Street, phone 323-261-4524), charming place with a fantastic $6.99 weekend buffet packed with soups and stews, birria, ribs, menudo, pozole, mole verde and mole poblano, nopales salad, home-made rice pudding, fruit salad and more.
It's on the fringes of Boyle Heights, but the northeast corner of Whittier & Soto is home to El Borrego de Oro, which at last check served luscious weekend-only goat meat, pulled from a garbage bag-lined cardboard box, wrapped in aluminum foil and packed to go with a stack of fresh grilled corn tortillas.

El Zarape on 1st (2 blocks East of Soto. Small cafe w/homestyle Mexican...really good Posole (red or green)
New Formosa Cafe on Chavez (1 block East of Soto). Old school Chinese - Cook/owner Dewey is the son of one of the owners of the original Far East Cafe.
Carioca on 1st (1 block West of Soto). Pretty good sit-down Mexican joint.
Concur on Ciro's and Al & Bea's!!
I have not been to El Sol in quite some time.......glad to hear it's still good.
You can also check out the Eastside Luv Winebar. It's on 1st right next to the Mariachi Plaza. (1 block East of Boyle Av.)
