Yogurt Patrol: Red Mango opens in Westwood

Yes, there's free frozen yogurt to be had on opening day at Red Mango, 10942 Weyburn Ave., Westwood Village from 4-6 p.m. These guys supposedly started the whole craze back in Korea, so let me know how it is.

Lately I've been liking Milano Freezer the best -- they're on Olympic in Beverly Hills and a block or so west of Pinkberry on Melrose. Better prices, nice smooth consistency and the green apple flavor is most pleasant on a hot day. They've also got gelato for the traditionalists.

I like ceFiore better than Pinkberry too -- strange name, but they've just opened in La Crescenta and Encino and will soon open in Arcadia. They do a swirl of two flavors at no extra charge, and the green tea has a good clear flavor.

i had the Red Mango today in Westwood. they had a booth on Broxton and gave out free yogurt all day long at the LA Film Festival. i found it creamier than Pinkberry and with less of that special Pinkberry tang.

it was really delicious and cold. it melted quickly, but i inhaled it before any serious damage could be done!

they offered the usual toppings and i had mine with strawberries and blueberries. the blueberries were plump and perfect.

i would go there if i was walking by, but it won't be a destination spot. if i'm driving all the way to Westwood, i'll get Diddy Reese!

I tried the free Red Mango today... the lines were very long, but I waited ... and...

It was absolutely delicious!!! Tastes much more like yogurt than Pinkberry. I like Pinkberry, but I think Red Mango is soooo much better!!! And, they were passing out nutritional flyers, and they seem to have less calories than Pinkberry.

My summary: Red Mango is creamier and has a much better flavor than Pinkberry. Pinkberry's still good, but I've got to say that Red Mango is a lot better!!!!

is ceFiore related to Cafe Fiore in Little Tokyo? They also have a good product. Or is this a new trend...ripping off not just Pinkbery with a Prefix-Berry name modification, but ripping off Pinkberry rip-offs, by adding a weird prefix to the lesser known Fiore? Hmmm. Curious.

Also, Kiwiberri re-opened after a 'makeover'.

A new ceFiore is just days from opening in Hollywood in the spot recently vacated by Gelato Paradiso located next to Hooters on Hollywood Blvd. Great locate since it's directly across the street from The Chinese Theater and the H&H Project. Can't wait to try it!

I'm from La Crescenta and i absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE ce fiore. the price is about the same as pinkberry but their green tea yogurt is way better. i usually get a small green tea with red beans and dream of it while i'm back at school...

I tried Red Mango and found it tastier then PB as well. Their stuff is much smoother with less of the 'tart'.

Check out our take here:

First of all, Red Mango most definitely did not start the froyo craze, it was Yogen Fruz. Second - Yogen Fruz is coming to LA very soon and it will blow the sox off of all the rest of them. I had the stuff while I was living in Canada, and let me tell you, it is the real deal.

I adore Pinkberry, so when I heard that Red Mango was like Pinkberry, but better, I was eager to give it a taste. So, I went to Westwood this afternoon, drove all around looking for a parking spot, finally found one, and went in and ordered a medium plain with Fruity Pebbles as the topping. It was so not worth the hype or the effort. I don't know if Red Mango was having an off day or what, but what I had just wasn't that good. It was much, much creamier than Pinkberry, but I didn't find that to be a good trait because it was also denser and heavier than what I was looking for. It wasn't nearly as cold as Pinkberry, and it had very little of the tartness that I so love at Pb. It just had a weird taste to me, and kind of reminded me of a low-carb dessert one of my co-workers made a couple of years ago. Also, the fruity pebbles were stale. I didn't find Red Mango to be much of a bargain, either. The medium was $3.50 with no toppings. It was $1.00 for one topping and $1.25 for two. So, with my one topping I ended up paying the same amount as a Pinkberry medium that comes with three toppings. I usually gobble down a Pinkberry, and enjoy the tangy tart taste it leaves in my mouth, but I didn't even want to finish the Red Mango yogurt, and it had such an odd aftertaste. I might give Red Mango another try if I'm already in Westwood, but I am definitely not going to seek it out again. Instead, I'll go to the Pinkberry down the street from me when I'm craving some froyo...which is almost every day. : )

I finally tried the red mango and it was great. It was creamier, and did not melt as fast as pinkberry. also, the store is much more cool, like a place to chill. someone told me about the ipod booth, and it is very cool.

i like it! something about it tastes more sophisticated. Like everyone said, it is creamier than PB, which I like. My trusted strawberry topping was awesome!

The only problem is, I love PB's tangy taste. Sucks, now I have to eat at both places!

ceFiore is much better than pinkberry and they have more flavors...Plain, plain sour, green tea and blackberry. There is a shop that opened not too long ago in North Hollywood too and they are starting to drum up more business - yeah! It is on Lankershim just south of Magnolia where the Dairy Queen used to be. Go out and support ceFiore - it is worth it!

I have to say.. Red Mango is about 500 times better than pinkberry.. first of all.. ce fiore copied pinkberry which copied red mango.. five years ago when i was in korea before this fro yo craze in LA.. i had red mango.. and i fell in love.. however, when i came back to the states.. i could not find any frozen yogurt place that had the same sweet, tart, creaminess of red mango.. so when i heard red mango was opening in LA.. i HAD to go.. immediately, the old flavor, the original flavor of frozen yogurt exploded in my mouth.. i have to admit.. pinkberry did satisfy my cravings for frozen yogurt but all in all.. the original frozen yogurt is the best frozen yogurt... needless to say.. red mango has earned a customer for life.. and i can guarantee that red mango will have a LOT more customers than pinkberry once word gets out..

I just like the fact that at Cefiore I can go with friends who don't actually want frozen yogurt but want coffee or tea and we can all go and hang out there. There is a larger variety of products.
