El Chavo changes hands

Here's an update on what's going on at El Chavo from my restaurant news column in the Los Feliz Ledger. As Eating L.A. wrote about several months ago, the Edendale Grill's Melanie Tusquellas has taken over the Sunset Blvd. Mexican spot. Tusquellas, who has been eating at El Chavo with her food biz family since she was a child, says she'll keep the Mexican decor and potent cocktails much the same while giving the menu "more of a food sensibility." She's also expanding the hours to serve the post-Vista crowd and giving the 40-year old spot a cosmetic facelift over the next six months while remaining open for business. New entertainers will be added, as well as more dishes from Spain and various regions of Mexico. It's about time!

This is possibly the worst news I have had all year...I won't go back. Edendale is a great place to drink, but the food is awful. Spanish food on the menu??? What a horrible idea...this was the best Mexican food in LA, and now, tragically, it will likely turn into Cobras and Matadors or some other crappy place. It's a good thing Villa Sombrero in Highland Park and Teresita's in ELA are still operating!

The previous comment is right on the money. Spanish food??? WTF? El Chavo (at least before the sale) was the best Mexican food around. And the dude playing the guitar always got a well-deserved dollar from yours truly. What's next? Are they going to take down all the Dolly art? Outrageous!

thefadd must be a gringo! What's the matter ese, can't handle the hot sauce at El Chavo? El Compadre and Mexico City are great for the gentrified hipsters in Silverlake and Los Feliz, but not for people who like good Mexican food. I don't think I have ever had worse Mexican food than at El Compadre...they just slather everything with yellow cheese and sauce...yuk! El Chavo was only second to Teresitas in ELA and possibly Villa Sombrero...check it out thefadd, or are you too scared?

El Chavo has great food! It has been my favorite restaurant for more than 20 years. Please don't change anything (except maybe better lighting in the restroom). I'll go elsewhere for Spanish food -- I want delicious Mexican food, great margaritas, and killer spicy hot sauce, all of which El Chavo specialized in. (Steve J.)
