Jade's opening party: Raw deal part II

Raw food fans at the Jade opening
So despite my disparaging comments about raw food restaurants, they let me into the opening party for Silver Lake's new Jade restaurant anyway. It wasn't at the small restaurant on Griffith Park Blvd. but at the groovy Silver Lake Yards salvage and antique depot which is kind of under the 4100 Club on Manzanita. The party was full of raw food aficionados and assorted hipster types nibbling on endive with vegan cream cheese while lounging on carefully aged vintage lawn furniture. I didn't spy much food the whole time -- I heard about some shitake hors d'oeuvres, but I never saw them, and I had a taste of a raw eggplant slice rolled around more cream cheese. Not bad, although generally I think eggplant benefits from cooking. The blonde woman in the photo above said she's been raw for three years, and it cleared up her skin and numerous other problems.
I guess I'll have to wait until the restaurant opens to have my first real raw meal -- I've heard the chef, Lesa Carlson, is quite good. Perhaps I'll try a Tibetan Magic tonic ($6), said to increase physical endurance and improve sexual performance, and some Squash Hash Brown Stacks ($16) , finished off with Apricot Chiffon Cream for dessert ($5). Or perhaps I'll flee across the street to Malo for some carne asada tacos and a stiff margarita.

i have to admit, i'm vexed and dissappointed about there not being much food to try. my interest in those squash "hashbrown" sticks has been piqued since your first entry mentioning jade.

it sounds like a stereotypical raw crowd (not to seem rude). i'm always on the look for good raw food. the search has not come to any truly pleasant results thus far. but i love new cuisines done well.

It cleared her skin by dissolving her brain.
Raw food is full of fiber. Fiber causes bowel movements, and if you poop a lot, your skin will clear up unless you have hormonal, cystic acne.

I eagerly looked forward to the party, myself
with high hopes of bountiful culinary delights.
A lackluster glob of humus-like goo on a leaf of bitter endive was the best I encountered that evening (though I may have found the perfect vintage hopper window for my bathroom.) Half blurry from too many dixie cups of cheap red wine,
we stopped for rewarmed-Costco appetizers at the Flying Leap – an appropriate end to the evening.

One strog vote for the carne asada option.

Rachael said...

I'm certain Raw Food Chefs are all up on these sort of things, but I would be hesitant to eat eggplant or potato raw. Toxins scare me. LOL.

Anonymous said...

OK, maybe my karma isn't right, or my aura needs adjusting, or something, but I'm confused. I went by the place this weekend, and it AIN'T OPEN. So how did you have a "grand opening" party for a restaurant, which ain't open, and which wasn't at the restaurant? Am I just too linear?

i've been fortunate enough to try their 'chedder cheese', mango sorbet, 'cream cheese', coconut cream, the eggplant and more - i've seen folks in there 'til 5 a.m. working tirelessly to make the place enjoyable. i'm not a raw foods afficianado - i've tried Juliana's in Santa Monica and was in pain for the rest of the day, but the food in Jade Cafe seems to be more like 'nosh' food for lack of a better term. the items are like snack foods - but are healthy fillers as well.

of course i love a plate of asada - but that shits a dime a dozen around LA - so for all the worry-warts around here, good things come to those that wait - and it will be more than just good.

Pest control in the perennial garden
http://home-gardening.blogspot.com/
If you have any good tips please post trhem on my blog

One of the many advantages of growing perennials is the ability of these beautiful flowers to return to full bloom season after season. While this ability to bloom repeatedly is one of the things that makes perennials so special, it also introduces a number of important factors into your gardening plan. One of the most important of these is a proper pest control regimen.

While a garden full of annuals starts each season as a blank slate, the perennial garden is essentially a work in progress. The fact that the plants stay in the ground through winter makes things like proper pruning, disease management and pest control very important. If the garden bed is not prepared properly after the current growing season, chances are the quality of the blooms will suffer when the next season rolls around.

One of the most important factors to a successful perennial pest control regimen is the attention and vigilance of the gardener. As the gardener, you are in the best position to notice any changes in the garden, such as spots on the leaves, holes in the leaves, or damage to the stems. Any one of these could indicate a problem such as pest infestation or a disease outbreak.

It is important to nip any such problem in the bud, since a disease outbreak or pest infestation can easily spread to take over an entire garden. Fortunately for the gardener, there are a number of effective methods for controlling both common pests and frequently seen plant diseases.

Some of these methods are chemical in nature, such as insecticides and fungicides, while others are more natural, like using beneficial insects to control harmful ones. While both approaches have their advantages and disadvantages, many gardeners prefer to try the natural approach first, both for the health of the garden and the environment.

There is an additional benefit of the natural approach that many gardeners are unaware of. These days, it is very popular to combine a koi pond with a garden, for a soothing, relaxing environment. If you do plan to incorporate some type of fish pond into your garden landscape, it is critical to avoid using any type of insecticide or fungicide near the pond, since it could seep into the water and poison the fish. Fish are extremely sensitive to chemicals in the environment, especially with a closed environment like a pond.

As with any health issue, for people or plants, prevention is the best strategy to disease control and pest control alike. The best defense for the gardener is to grow a garden full of the healthiest, most vigorous plants possible. Whenever possible, varieties of plants bred to be disease or pest resistant should be used. There are a number of perennials that, through selective breeding, are quite resistant to the most common plant diseases, so it is a good idea to seek them out.

Happy gardening,
Stan

Hi, it's terrific to find such great info. This last post especially hit home, so I thought you might like to know. Because acne is so important (even to my mother!), Perhaps you'd like to take a look at Acne Treatment Choices -- I have good info on acne there too. Hope to see you there.
