Island Girl: Eating L.A. goes to Hawaii
Eating L.A. has fled urban Silver Lake and the steamy asphalt of the Sunset Junction Fair for a week...we're holing up on the North Shore of Oahu sampling the local specialties. Since we have a house, we're mostly cooking and exploring the bounty of Foodland, but we get out every now and then. So far we've been to Ku Aina Burgers in Haleiwa for pineapple and avocado burgers and Ted's Bakery, just up the street from our house, for chocolate coconut cream pie. Yesterday after renting kayaks we got plate lunches from a church fundraiser next to Aoki's shave ice...yummy kalua pork and shortribs (pictured). Sam's a new convert to Hawaiian macaroni salad. I love shopping here...so far, I've had amazing yogurt in coconut (haupia in Hawaii), mango and guava flavors, pretty lavender poi english muffins, a nice malasada from Teds, poke, super fresh shrimp from Fumi's shrimp stand that we ate with spaghetti...and we've hardly even started on the restaurants yet!

Don't miss the shrimp trucks and shave ice stands! For NoSho shave ice, I like Matsumoto and Mura (same ice, no line), but think Aoki is not quite as good.
Make sure to hit the shrimp trucks out by Kahuku if possible. Big fan of Giovanni's. Try the Spicy. Delicious, but REALLY hot (and this is from a guy who eats japalenos whole for snacks).
If you get to Honolulu don't miss the Side Street Inn or (if you want upscale) Alan Wong's (one of the best restaurants in the world).
I just moved to LA from Honolulu in June, I am so jealous! Not to be missed holes in the wall are Green Door Cafe in Chinatown for amazing Singaporean, Monarch Seafood in Iwilei for gourmet take out platelunches and Young's Fish Market (also in Iwilei) for laulaus that can't be beat (and the best char siu turkey tails).
i spent a summer teaching at UH manoa so my experience is sort of centered on the area near campus. i loved irifune on kapahulu (they boast that all the dishes have tons of garlic). hopefully you've been told to hit leonard's bakery for malasadas, very tasty cream puffs (coconut is my favorite. not as light as beard papa but still really good). also on kapahulu but a little further north.
i read you via RSS; thanks for the great blog. if you're on the North Shore you absolutely must visit a fish place, formerly called "Taste of Paradise." (can't remember what it's called now...) it's on Kam Hwy. mauka side, about a mile or so down from Ted's Bakery, at Sunset Beach. look for the big tiki head. the fish is fresh-caught (get there early for the ahi) and is served with rice & salad. cover it all with the dressing made in a local garden up the hill from Foodland in Pupukea and enjoy! you can eat there every night and never, ever get tired of it.
as for the shave ice, try it with red beans and ice cream...skip Halaiwa Joe's (kinda overrated, go to above place for fish)...glad you tried the church fundraiser plate; they do pork good there!
