Silver Lake's Sila says adieu...what now?

Sila on Hyperion at Griffith Park was the new name for Fritzie's, but despite a revamped menu and chef, the reboot never quite gelled. Then there was the strange interlude when it was going to become Hora Bohemian Bistro. Owners Ray and Frank had been planning another revamp into the Rosemary Cafe but decided to call it quits instead, and will serve their last dinner this Saturday. Here's hoping the space can become one of those holy grails of Silver Lake dining: some decent Chinese food, or a reasonably-priced, fresh and casual cafe with awesome breakfasts. Or a real bread bakery. Or a freshly-baked bagel shop. What would you like to see on this high-traffic corner?

  1. I shouldn't say this, for the sake of my mid-section but I would like a pastry shop!

  2. I still have never been to this place. Intelli or Forage could open up an annex in the spot and it would be packed round the clock. Otherwise a bakery would be great, but we're perfectly happy to hop over the Hyperion bridge to Proof. But it's a small lot and crowded stretch, so those are challenges. You might need fairly quick turnover for it to work. (Or people could wind up parking in the Gelson's lot.)

  3. I'm sorry that things didn't work out! Frank is a classy guy; I wish he and his partner well in the future.

What I'd like to see is a good affordable bistro, like SiLa. Unfortunately, after your unwarranted scathing review of Fritzie's and not much better mea culpa review of SiLa, this place never had a chance (the economy and changing "foodie" dynamics of the neighborhood didn't help either, but much like Broadway, in the restaurant biz, reviews kill). Hopefully you've learned that your power on the Internet is not something to trifle with when it comes to your neighbors (whether those neighbors are in Silver Lake, Pasadena, or elsewhere).

However, I'm not sure if you've learned anything, as it seems that by the snark in this post, you're ready to dance on the grave of one restaurant in order to "sweep under the rug" your crimes of past reviews. Whether it be a bagel shop, Chinese food, or more likely, an overpriced/overhyped "holy grail" that utilizes westside prices/foodie marketing as a trick to fool eaters into thinking they have class, rather then community, I, for one, will never forget what you've done. What a shame.

  5. A good sushi place!!! Silverlake is desperate for one. (And as much as I wanted to like Sila, it was just too expensive for the quality of the food.)

  6. the guys were sweet, but they never should have changed it from the slightly above average italian "classy" gay joint. everything after was overpriced and not special, sorry to say. i vote for another canele-like spot, but less expensive.

Sorry SiLa, but I say good riddance. The food just wasn't that good, certainly not for the price. It's too bad the owners couldn't make it work, but I'm honestly not going to miss the place, not when there are plenty of genuinely delicious restaurants nearby to choose from. It was just kind of a depressing joint to eat at. Personally, I found your reviews of both incarnations to be fair and accurate. Ultimately, hungry people voted with their wallets, and Fritzie's/SiLa did not please them so they stayed away. End of story. Better luck next time to the owners, but hopefully, after years of disappointing mediocrity, something tasty and interesting will finally end up in that spot.

  8. I agree, the food was over rated, their potato nests were always stale, just a mediocre place.
