L.A. Food and Wine Hits Town Next Weekend: It's the Celebrity Chef Festival

Asian Night Market at last year's L.A. Food and Wine festival
I'm not sure why L.A.'s two biggest food festivals are scheduled back to back over the next two weekends just as it starts to heat up, but c'est la vie, it's time to eat! First up is L.A. Food and Wine, entering its third year with more than two dozen events from Wednesday August 21 to Sunday August 25 spread out between Downtown L.A., Santa Monica and Beverly Hills. In contrast to the Los Angeles Times the Taste festival on Labor Day weekend, L.A.F.W. has more celebrity chefs and notable out-of-towners (Giada de Laurentiis, Iron Chef Morimoto, Grant Achatz, Rick Bayless, Thomas Keller). Next week we'll preview the Taste's more local pleasures and personalities.
Last year, the Asian Night Market was a good time with very manageable lines, boozy popsicles, people actually dancing in the street and some excellent tastes. This year's event features chefs and restaurants including David Lefevre, Yujean Kang, Starry Kitchen, Nobu, David Myers (Hinoki & the Bird), Jet Tila, the Spice Table, Night + Market, Mo-Chica and Seoul Sausage with dozens of wineries as well as beer and cocktails.
What else sounds intriguing at L.A. Food and Wine? If you're into:
Cocktails: Mixology lunch at Hinoki & the Bird with guest chef Charles Phan from the Slanted Door (8/23)
Bacon and bourbon: Is there anybody who isn't? Chef Edward Lee of Louisville, Kentucky's 610 Magnolia cooks up pork bits paired with small batch bourbons at the Dorothy Chandler pavilion. (8/24)
Wine and cheese: Cheese expert Laura Werlin pairs wines with a selection of cheeses, if you're up for that at 10:30 a.m. on a Sunday (8/24).
These events can be pricey, but L.A.F.W. donates a portion of the proceeds to Share our Strength.
