ReplyDeleteAgain, Bay Area restaurants sweep the Beard nominations, at least as far as Best Chef: California, which is the one that counts. And again the process is exposed as ludicrous. Palate and Animal should certainly have been finalists for best new restaurant - Bazaar is more like best new franchise - and though I have respect for Patterson, Kinch, etc., it is definitely time for Cimarusti, Meyer and Citrin to be recognized nationally. L.A. kind of was jobbed.
ReplyDeleteNo. LA is an ethnic food town; our "fine restaurants" are about on par with St. Louis's. Gold's and Goin's nominations are about right; I would have been surprised to see any others.
ReplyDeleteAnd yeah, I'm a native, and even I think we can't compete with Seattle, let alone San Francisco or Chicago, and forget New York. This city just won't support actual fine dining - its citizen just don't put a premium on it.
