 Moko has replaced Gyenari on the busy stretch of Washington Blvd. in Culver City that offers a large choice of restaurants, so every restaurant has to really pull its weight. Apparently Gyenari wasn't pulling them in anymore, so owner Will Shin re-concepted and brought in a new chef, Gary Robins. The owners of Neo Meze on Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena, who also own hotdoggery Doghaus, have totally redone the space and re-opened as gastropub King's Row. The bar area has a retractable ceiling for warm summer nights, and there's a large patio in the back alley similar to the one at Lucky Baldwin's a few doors down. With more Best tastes from the Beer Fest: We only sampled a small slice of the bounty at the beer festival, but a few highlights were:
1) Our favorite was Firestone Walker's Parabola, a hefty, chocolatey Imperial Stout with 13% alcohol and notes of anise or ginger. If I ever find a bottle of this, I'll make sure to try a float with a mild, caramelly ice cream.

I just got back from Berkeley, where the Cheese Board and others have apparently changed the name of tomorrow's holiday to Indigenous People's Day.

In L.A., it's still Columbus Day, I was reminded by this article in the Daily News about L.A.'s Italian heritage. Everyone was raving about Bazaar's papas canarias the other night, and they're actually pretty easy to make. Hopefully you have a fairly high salt tolerance -- I recommend offsetting the pleasant saltiness with something like a mild, flaky white fish. Here's the recipe from MarthaStewart.com:
